Students who wish to study any English medium department are required to sit for SFL Profciency Exam if they do not have the equivalent profciency score from exams, which are determined by the HKU Senate, given below. If successful, students go on doing their studies in their respective
faculties without having EPP. Students who are not able to pass the SFL Profciency Exam or do not have required score from the exams given below are required to attend and successfully fulfil the requirements of English Preparatory Program provided by the SFL.

The students who pass the SFL Profciency and Placement Exam conducted at the beginning of the academic year pass to their departments and go on doing their studies. The ones who are not able to pass are placed in the appropriate level and start their language program according to the result obtained from the exam. The SFL Profciency and Placement Exam will be held on the day defined in Academic Calendar at the SFL building. The student lists and exam time will be announced on the SFL webpage the week before the exam. The students studying ELT department will take an exam which includes all the skills and need to score at least 70 to be exempted. The students studying other departments will take an exam includes all the skills except for speaking and need to score at least 65 to be exempted.
