English Preparatory Program

Hasan Kalyoncu University is a university whose language of instruction is English, and students are encouraged to learn at least one foreign language. Some language courses are offered as electives in departments. At Hasan Kalyoncu University, academic departments are divided into two main groups in terms of language of instruction. While courses in other departments are conducted entirely in Turkish, the 4 departments of the Faculty of Engineering, Political Science and International Relations, International Trade and Logistics, Aviation and Space Engineering, and English Language Teaching use an instructional model in which 30% or 100% of courses are in English. Therefore, students who wish to study in a department whose language of instruction is English are required to take the SFL Exemption and Level Placement Exam if they do not have an equivalent proficiency score in exams such as TOEFL, Pearson PTE and YDS determined by the HKU Senate. Students who are successful continue their education in their own faculties without taking the English preparatory program. Students who fail the SFL proficiency exam or do not obtain the required scores in the exams specified in advance are expected to attend the English Preparatory Program provided by SFL and to successfully fulfil the program’s requirements.

Program structure

At SFL, the English Preparatory Program consists of four terms within one academic year. The first semester consists of an 18-week period. In the first week of the term, an orientation program is organized for all students at HKU. Two weeks are allocated to the end-of-term exam for each level, and 15 weeks to teaching. The second semester consists of a 16-week period. Two weeks are allocated to the end-of-term exam for each level, and 14 weeks to the teaching process.

Levels and courses

In the English Preparatory Program, students receive comprehensive language education at a total of five levels: Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate and Advanced . At the Elementary and Pre-Intermediate levels, students take an integrated skills course supported by writing, listening and speaking courses. At the Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate and Advanced levels, students are given skills-based courses to give them the opportunity to significantly develop all their language skills. Following the skills-based courses, students take an ESP (English for Specific Purposes) course related to their own field of study, to build an educational bridge between SFL and their departments.

Conditions for completing the program

To successfully fulfil the requirements of the English Preparatory Program, a student studying in the English Language Teaching department must complete the Advanced level with an average of at least 70% or pass the SFL Exemption and Level Placement Exam held once a year (at the beginning of the academic year). To pass each level, an average of at least 70% is required.
